On March 28, it became known that doctors managed to stop the spread of necrosis in Kostomarov’s body, cerebral circulation also returned to normal. It was also reported that the athlete is being prepared for prosthetics.

Kostomarov was hospitalized on 10 January. He was diagnosed with left-sided pneumonia along with influenza B. According to Moskovsky Komsomolets, the skater was amputated with both feet, then the shins of both legs and the entire right hand, as well as several fingers of the left hand.
