Aleksander Ceferin is re-elected UEFA president and will go into his third term

During the 47th UEFA Congress, held in Lisbon this Wednesday, the current president of the confederation, Aleksander Ceferin, was re-elected to the post. The Slovenian was the only candidate and will remain in charge until 2027.

“I want to thank you very much, from the bottom of my heart, it means a lot to me. It’s a great moment, but also a great responsibility, for football. I promise to do my best not to disappoint you”, Ceferin gratified in his speech.

A lawyer by training, he had also been president of the Slovenian Football Association between 2011 and 2015. After a corruption scandal involving Michel Platini, then head of Uefa, Ceferin replaced the Frenchman in 2016 and has held office ever since, having been re-elected in 2019.

During his last term, the 55-year-old manager was one of those responsible for dealing with major events in European football, such as the stoppage of matches during the Covid-19 pandemic and the political conflicts involving Russia and Ukraine.

Ceferin was also noted for being one of the main opponents of the creation of the Superliga, a tournament idealized by major European clubs and an alternative to FIFA and Uefa competitions. In 2021, the president classified the championship as the result of the selfishness and narcissism of its defenders.

In addition to keeping the Slovenian in the presidency, the Hungarian Sándor Csányi and the English Debbie Hewitt were elected vice-presidents of Fifa for the next four years. The Portuguese Fernando Gomes and the German Bernd Neuendorf will join the board of the highest football entity.
