Main favorites in the tournament, Bayern managed to regain the leadership of the German Championship at the weekend. The 4-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund not only made the team pass the rival at the top of the table, but also marked the debut of new coach Thomas Tuchel.
In the Cup, still under the command of coach Julian Nagelsmann, the Bavarian team went through the round of 16 with a 4-0 defeat of Mainz. Biggest champion of the tournament, with 20 titles, the club has not lifted the trophy since the 2019/20 season, when it defeated Bayer Leverkusen.
The expectation is that Tuchel will repeat some of the names that started in Saturday’s game against Dortmund. At the time, the coach decided to abdicate the scheme with three defenders that had been used by the team, but he could return with the system for the match.
💬 #Tuchel about a rotation: “Our starting position does not allow us to do anything other than think about the next game. If we manage something, then only if there are recommendations from the medical field.”#FC Bayern #DFBPokal pic.twitter.com/c6yVWpl7FP

Freiburg, who were finalists in the last German Cup, are trying to surprise again. Despite losing to Leipzig on penalties, the team had never made it this far in the competition.
In this edition, the club passed Sandhausen with a 2-0 victory in the previous phase. Coach Christian Streich’s men have also been having a good campaign in the Bundesliga, occupying fourth place and fighting for a place in the next Champions League.
