Roma’s (5th) victory over second-place Sampdoria by 3-0 at the Olympic stadium in the Italian capital had moments of tension. The game valid for Italian Championship was marred by racist chants against Sampdoria coach Dejan Stankovic.
According to several media outlets, Roma supporters were calling Stankovic a “gypsy”, and Roma coach, Portuguese José Mourinho, had to intervene to calm the mood.
“I’m proud to be a gypsy, nobody can offend me by calling me a gypsy. José knows that”, said the commander of Sampdoria to the DAZN platform.
“I didn’t notice it on the pitch, but I thank José for having silenced the fans,” added the Serb, who was coached by Mourinho when he played for Inter Milan.
“He doesn’t need to thank me. I did this for a great man, for a friend, but I would do it for anyone else”, commented the Portuguese about the episode.
“Our fans are fantastic, but I thought I should go with my instinct,” concluded Mourinho.
Two games close the 28th round of the Italian Championship on Monday: Empoli-Lecce and Sassuolo-Torino.
