Olympic champion Teresa Yohaug said she felt sorry for the current Russian skiers
Four-time Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Teresa Johaug commented on the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to allow Russian athletes to participate in international tournaments in a neutral status. Her words are quoted by Expressen.
The athlete called the recommendations of the IOC completely wrong, emphasizing that at the same time she felt sorry for the current Russian skiers. “This is beyond their responsibility. I have nothing against them,” she said.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participating in tournaments.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus on the recommendation of the IOC. In particular, Russian skiers were denied admission to international tournaments for the 2022/2023 season.
