Boxer Carlos Mina will return to Ecuador after being released in October from a United States prison | Other Sports | sports

Document from the Ministry of Sports indicates that the tricolor boxer “served the 850-day sentence.”

The Minister of Sports, Sebastián Palacios, confirmed the return to Ecuador of boxer Carlos Andrés Mina Caicedo after being released last October from a United States prison, where he spent almost 900 days.

In 2019 when he was arrested, Mina was considered the greatest exponent of national boxing for his fifth place in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and bronze in the absolute World Championship in Hamburg in 2017.

“We are very happy that Carlos Mina, our athlete, is returning to Ecuador. We are very grateful to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate of Ecuador in Los Angeles (California) for the support they provided. As the Ministry of Sports we are going to be very aware of the return of Carlos to sports activity to give him all the necessary support and support, “said Palacios in a video recorded by journalist Alberto Astudillo and released this Thursday on the social network Twitter.

Mina had planned to participate in the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima and had her sights set on qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, but surprisingly, she did not appear in the competitions.

His family did not know of his whereabouts, until they learned the news that he was detained in the United States.

His mother, María Mina, in September 2019 said that Carlos went to Las Vegas tempted by a promoter who offered him to prepare better in the United States a month before the Pan American Games, but while there the situation changed. “They wanted him to sign a power of attorney to schedule fights there, he did not accept and then all this came,” said his mother.

However, the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE) said that the crimes charged in the United States to the Guayaquil fighter did not occur at the time of his preparation for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, but in 2017, when the athlete was part of Floyd Mayweather’s boxing camp.

It was known that the North American justice set a bail of $ 500,000 for him to defend himself in freedom during the process, but Mina did not have that money, which is why the tricolor boxer continued to be detained in the North American country.

Almost 900 days later, through an official statement from the Ministry of Sports dated November 18, 2021, it is stated that Mina will arrive in the country this Friday the 19 after he was released from a US prison on October 26 and transferred to a migrant center.

According to the same statement, the man from Guayaquil was in the county detention center (United States) since May 2019 and was finally released after serving the 850-day sentence. (D)
