Son regrets Conte’s departure and assumes responsibility: “I should have shown more”

A dismissal of coach Antonio Conte came while the main players of the Tottenham are with their national teams on the FIFA date. After loss to Uruguay in Tuesday’s friendlythe South Korean Son Heung-min commented on the departure of the Italian coach and revealed that he feels “responsible” for the termination of work at the English club.

“I don’t know what the other players think about him, but I feel sorry for him. I should have shown more but I couldn’t. I couldn’t help my teammates and I feel responsible for his sacking,” Son told a news conference.

Antonio Conte arrived at Tottenham in June 2021 and led the London team until last Sunday, when the club announced the coach’s resignation in “common agreement”. Despite not winning titles, he took Tottenham to Champions League.

“He’s a world-class coach, we’ve had a great journey together, I’m very grateful to him. He has great skill and coaching experience and I’m sure he will succeed in a new challenge,” added the South Korean striker.

Under Conte, Son scored 30 goals and provided 12 assists in 69 games played. This season, however, the player dropped in performance and did not have the same positive impact on the team as in recent years. For the English ChampionshipSon has scored just six of the 52 goals scored by Tottenham this season.

A few weeks ago, manager Antonio Conte called the players “selfish” and declared: “They don’t play for something important. They don’t want to play under pressure. They don’t want to play under stress. It’s easy that way. Tottenham’s history is it is”.

At the end of the season, Tottenham will be led by Cristian Stellini, who was Conte’s assistant at the club and will remain alongside assistant Ryan Mason, a former English player.
