Sanctions against Abramovich saw Chelsea close last season’s balance sheet in the red

The sanctions imposed by the UK government on Russian Roman Abramovich, former owner of chelseaare one of the factors that explain the club’s deficit of 121.3 million pounds (R$ 778.6 million) in the 2021/2022 season, according to a statement published by the English team this Monday.

The oligarch and billionaire, who would belong to the close circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by the British government in March last year, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army.

Chelsea, which Abramovich owned at the time, were placed under special arrangements, which limited their ability to sell tickets, organize events and even sign player contracts.

These restrictions were in effect until May 30 last year, the day on which the consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly increased its stake and took control of the club.

In a statement, Chelsea reported that its turnover in 2022 was 547 million euros (just over R$ 3 billion), against 494.9 million euros (R$ 2.7 billion) the previous year, despite the sanctions. .

Commercial revenues increased to 201 million euros (R$ 1.1 billion).

These financial results do not include signings in the last two transfer windows, in which the club spent more than 680 million euros (R$ 3.8 billion) on new players.

The club raised 140 million euros (approximately R$ 780 million) with the sale of players such as Tammy Abraham, Marc Guehi, Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma.

Chelsea maintained its willingness to comply with the financial regulations of UEFA and the Premier League, despite the damage and the impact of sanctions, which could even affect revenue “in the coming years”.

Londoners currently occupy the tenth position of the English Championshipvirtually no chance of reaching the ranking zone for the next Europe Champions Leaguebut they are still alive in the current edition of the continental tournament and will be opponents of Real Madrid in the quarterfinals.
