River Plate technician “opens the doors” for Otamendi’s return to Argentine football

Defender Nicolás Otamendi has a contract with Benfica, from Portugal, until the end of this season and his fate is being speculated in Argentine football. River Plate coach and former teammate of Otamendi, Martín Demichelis “opened the doors” for his return.

“What about Nico (Otamendi)? Let the season end and then he must think. You already know that the doors are open. He is in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, having a great season at the club he captains. You have to be patient, it’s not an easy decision. When you decide to come back, you have to be convinced”, declared Demichelis last Saturday after a friendly between River Plate and Universidad de Chile.

Revealed in the base categories of Vélez, Otamendi left Argentine football in 2010 when he was sold to Porto. The player came to play on loan at Atlético-MG for six months in 2014. Afterwards, the defender wore the Valencia jersey and Manchester Citywhere he played alongside Martín Demichelis under the command of Manuel Pellegrini.

Since 2020, Otamendi has defended Benfica and this season he took over as captain of the team. The eagles lead the Portuguese Championship by a large advantage and are in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

The Argentine national team is disputing friendlies in South America on this Fifa date and taking the opportunity to celebrate with their fans the world title won three months ago. During training, Argentina faced River Plate in a training game.
