L’Equipe: Russian tennis player Varvara Gracheva intends to play for France
Russian tennis player Varvara Gracheva intends to change sports citizenship and play for France. This became known to L’Equipe.
According to the source, the Russian woman, who has been training in Cannes since 2016, has applied for French citizenship. It is noted that Gracheva has already passed the language tests, which are one of the necessary conditions for obtaining a passport.
22-year-old Gracheva is ranked 54th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking. On March 6, for the first time in her career, she reached the final of the WTA tournament: in the decisive match of the competition in Austin (USA), the Russian woman lost to Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk.
In the spring of 2022, Russian tennis players were banned from playing in tournaments in the UK. Due to sanctions, domestic athletes were forced to miss Wimbledon. At other competitions of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and WTA, the Russians play in a neutral status.
