Ukrainian tank crews returned to their homeland after undergoing training in the management of Challenger 2 tanks in the UK. It is reported by RBC with reference to the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom.
The training included instructions on command, control and teamwork as part of the crew, as well as on effective identification and engagement of targets, the military department clarified.
According to The Guardian, it is assumed that these military will be involved in the spring counter-offensive.
The Challenger 2 is a British Army main battle tank developed by BAE Systems in 1994. It is equipped with a 120mm L30A1 rifled cannon and two 7.62mm machine guns. The effective firing range is 8 km. The Challenger 2 is one of the heaviest Western tanks, weighing almost 75 tons.
The UK became the first country to announce the supply of Western-made tracked tanks to Ukraine in early 2023. For London, similar decisions were made by the United States, Germany and other Western countries. Initially, London planned to transfer 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, however, according to Ukrainian Ambassador Vadym Prystaiko, following the results of Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit, it was decided to increase this number to 28.
