Groves achieves a feat in Molins de Rei the day Bernal leaves the race due to a fall
the aussie Kaden Groves (Alpecin) beat the Frenchman Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) in the sprint of the sixth stage of the Volta a Catalunya ending in Molins de Rei (Barcelona), thanks to a feat in the last three kilometres, in which had to catch the big group and advance positions after puncturing the tire with just over three kilometers to go.
The leader, the Slovenian, also participated in the sprint Cousin Roglic (Jumbo Visma), and the second overall, the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick-step).
Neither of them achieved bonuses. They had already added them in the two intermediate sprints of the day. The first was for Roglic and the second for Evenepoel. Thus, the difference is still 10 seconds before the final stage that will take place tomorrow, Sunday, in Barcelona.
The battle for the general caused the day’s breakaway not to form until after the first intermediate sprint, located at kilometer 66 of the route, despite the multiple attempts that there were. Roglic’s Jumbo Visma didn’t let anyone go on an adventure.
With 90 kilometers to go there was a multiple fall in which the Colombian was involved Egan Bernal (INEOS). The man from Bogotá decided to leave because of the fall.
The Bahrain Victorious began to do group work in the big group to prevent Soler, fifth overall, from overtaking the Basque Michael Landawith whom he was tied on time.
Thus, Roglic and Evenepoel went towards the goal together, with the second pulling the breakaway despite the fact that he repeatedly asked the Slovenian to take over. Finally, the world champion decided to throw in the towel with 9 kilometers to go.
In a crazy finish, Landa and the Italian Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segrafredo) also tried to escape, but the sprinter teams managed to control the situation.
Bad luck was for Kaden Groves, who had already won in Sabadell, who flattened a little over three kilometers. But in the blink of an eye, the Australian turned this misfortune into a starting point to achieve an extraordinary comeback that led him to his second stage victory in this Volta.
