The RFU wanted to hold the return match with Iran in Russia

The RFU announced its intention to hold the return match with Iran in Russia in the fall of 2023

Maxim Mitrofanov, Secretary General of the Russian Football Union (RFU), announced his intention to hold a second friendly match against Iran. His words are quoted by Izvestia.

“There is a desire to invite Iran to play in Russia. There are talks, tentatively for the autumn, as already in November they start the qualifying tournament. But for now, we will not get ahead of ourselves,” Mitrofanov said.

On March 23, the Russian national football team played a 1:1 draw with the Iranian team in Tehran. Russian midfielder Anton Miranchuk scored the first goal in the 28th minute from the penalty spot. In the 47th minute, Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi also converted a penalty and equalized the score.

On March 26, the Russians will meet with football players from Iraq at the Gazprom Arena stadium in St. Petersburg. The confrontation will begin at 18:00 Moscow time.

On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation and the Union of European Football Associations excluded Russian teams and clubs from international tournaments. Domestic teams do not play in European competitions, and the Russian team was deprived of the opportunity to compete for reaching the finals of the 2022 World Cup.
