Messi scores 800th career goal as Argentina beat Panama in first game after World Cup

This Thursday, the Argentina received Panama in a friendly match and won 2-0, with goals from Thiago Almada and Lionel Messi, who reached the mark of 800 goals in his career.

This was the first commitment of Argentina’s senior team since winning the World Cup in Qatar at the end of last year. Before the match, there was a tribute to the heroes of Argentina’s third world championship and an Olympic tour of the Monumental de Núñez.

Argentina is now back on the field to face Curaçao in a friendly this Tuesday, at the Unico Madre de Ciudades Stadium, in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. Panama now visits the Costa Rica national team, for the CONCACAF League of Nations, on Tuesday at 11 pm (Brasília time).

The game

Argentina dominated the actions of the first half, as expected, but did not open the scoring in the first 45 minutes. Lionel Scaloni’s team had more ball possession and game volume, generating real goal chances, but failed in the finalizations inside the opponent’s area. The best opportunity came in the 16th minute, with Messi taking a free kick and stamping the goalkeeper José Guerra’s crossbar.

In the second half, the game began to get frustrating for the “hermanos”, who continued to dominate, but wasting many clear scoring opportunities. In the 33rd minute, after Messi hit the post with yet another free-kick, Thiago Almada scored and finally scored zero.

After hitting the post on two other occasions, Messi finally scored his goal, from a free kick, in the 44th minute of the final stage, reaching the 800th goal in his career and closing his account at Monumental.
