23 teams, 18 in the UCI WorldTeam category and another five in the UCI ProTeam category, including Euskaltel-Euskadi, Caja Rural and Kern Pharmathey will be at the Itzulia starting line. Daniel Felipe Martinez he will wear the number 1, as the winner of the last edition of the race, and will try to repeat the victory achieved in 2022, but for that he will have to overcome some of the best cyclists of this start of the season and others who, without having shone in so far this year, they should also be taken into account for their high level.

In the absence of seeing Martínez’s response in the race, who has not stood out since the 2023 season began, the main contender for victory in Itzulia is Jonas Vingegaard. The Dane dominated with absolute clarity in O Gran Camiño, with victory in the three stages that were finally held in the Galician race (the first stage was suspended due to adverse weather), as well as, of course, in the general classification, and showed a good level in Paris-Nice, where he finished third, behind Tadej Pogacar and David Gaudú.

The latter, who will lead Groupama – FDJ, will also be in the Basque round, and, in view of his excellent performance in the French event, he deserves to be on the list of great favourites. Three Basque cyclists, two from Bahrain – Victorious, Pello Bilbao and Mikel Landaand another from Cofidis, Ion IzagirreThey are also on the list of cyclists who start with options to fight for victory. Pello Bilbao, currently seventh in the world ranking, arrives at a great moment, just like Landa, who is currently showing his good pedal stroke in the Volta a Catalunya. Ion Izagirre, winner of Itzulia in 2019 and second classified in 2022, is an expert in delivering great performances in his home race.
