The goalkeeper of Porto Diogo Costa was cut from the selection of Portugal due to muscle myalgia, according to a note released by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).
With that, Celton Biai, 22-year-old goalkeeper for Vitória Guimarães, was called to replace Diogo Costa in the commitments against Liechtenstein and Luxembourg, for the Euro 2024 Qualifiers. Celton had been summoned to defend the Under-20 cast of Portugal.
Coach Roberto Martínez regretted the absence of Diogo Costa for the next few games, but also highlighted the need to spare his goalkeeper and the confidence he has in the other names in the squad.
“Rui Patrício and José Sá are working very well. It’s a shame, but we have to avoid any problems. Diogo [Costa] was dismissed and we have to try to find other options”, said the technician to the Sports TVfrom Portugal.
