Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) beat his greatest rival for this Volta a Catalunya, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma)thanks to an attack in the last meters of the ascent of La Molina (Girona), where the third stage.

Evenepoel managed to take two seconds from Roglic, plus four seconds from the bonuses. Those six seconds in total serve the Belgian to draw on time with the Slovenianwho will continue one more day as leader of the Volta.

Roglic and Evenepoel slipped away from the peloton in the final kilometers of the ascent to La Molina and they disputed the victory among themselves. In a closed curve and close to the final stretch of the finish line, Evenepoel released Roglic and went straight to victory. But stopped pedaling with about 30-40 meters still ahead, he dedicated himself to celebrating and, behind, Roglic did pedal almost to the line and entered 2 seconds. If Evenepoel had pushed more, he would have been the new leader.

The third place of the stage went to the third in the general classification, which is Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), 19 seconds behind the first two, and who entered the finish line 19 seconds behind Evenepoel. Along with the Italian, in a group of seven riders, Mikel Landa also entered (Bahrain Victorious). The Basque cyclist remains fourth in the general classification, 44 seconds behind from Roglic.

Stage Summary

Soon the breakaway of the day was formed with seven runners among which stood out Richard Carapaz (EF Education-Easy Post) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis). The group of escapees formed: Jonathan Cepeda (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Maxim van Gils (Lotto-Dstny), Simone Petilli (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Filippo Zana (Jayco-AlUla) and Niklas Eg (Uno-X Pro Cycling).

However, Evenepoel’s team did not let them take too much advantage. Later, they hardened the race in the second port of the day, the Coll de la Creueta in the special category, and reduced the members of the favorites to less than 30. Among those who gave in were Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) and José Herrada (Cofidis).

Little by little, the peloton was catching the members of the breakaway. Once the leak is neutralized, Evenepoel launched the attack with 4.5 kilometers to go and the only one who reached the wheel was Roglic. From behind there were attempts to connect with them, but no one could keep up with them.

In the final metres, Remco Evenepoel was better than Primoz Roglic and the victory of the stage went to the Belgian runner.
