Ovechkin breaks 32-year NHL record

Ovechkin broke Gretzky’s 32-year NHL record against the Columbus Blue Jackets

Russian striker “Washington Capitals” Alexander Ovechkin broke the record of the National Hockey League (NHL) 32 years ago. This is reported by the correspondent of “Lenta.ru”.

The hockey player scored in the NHL regular season home game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, scoring his 40th goal this season. Ovechkin opened the scoring with a pass from the right flank to the far post to Dylan Strome in the fifth minute. The pass was intercepted by Columbus defender Nick Blankenburg, from whose stick the puck was poisoned into an empty net. At first, the year was credited to Strome, but a few minutes later it was rewritten to Ovechkin, as it turned out that Strome had not touched the puck.

The 37-year-old Russian reached this mark for the 13th time in his career, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record for the number of seasons in which players scored 40 or more goals. The Canadian had 12 such seasons.

On March 20, Ovechkin broke the 54-year-old NHL record. He passed Gordie Howe in goals among players over 37 in the first 65 games of the season. The Canadian during this period in the 1968/1969 season scored 37 times, the Russian – 39.

Ovechkin has been playing in the NHL since 2005. He spent all seasons in North America with Washington. Together with the club, the hockey player won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
