Arsenal to face MLS stars in US league All-Star Game

O Arsenal will face a team of Major League Soccer stars from the United States led by former England striker Wayne Rooney in the All-Star Game on July 19, the American soccer league said on Tuesday.

The friendly game will be played at Audi Field in Washington, which has a capacity of 20,000 spectators and is home to DC United, commanded by Rooney since July 2022.

Current Premier League leaders Arsenal already participated in the MLS All-Star Game in 2016, a game that the London team won 2-1.

That year, Didier Drogba scored for the American League combined and Joel Campbell and Chuba Akpom scored for the Gunners.

The team of Spanish coach Mikel Arteta had already chosen the USA as a destination to play several friendlies in the last pre-season, in which they faced Everton in Baltimore and Chelsea in Orlando.

“Our tour of the USA has been good preparation for the season and we look forward to visiting our amazing fans in the country once again,” Arteta said in the MLS statement.

Wayne Rooney will participate in the event for the third time, after playing as a player for DC United in the duel against Atlético Madrid in 2019 and for Manchester United in the 2011 edition.

“The opportunity to lead the best our league has to offer against a Premier League club like Arsenal will be a defining moment for me personally and an unforgettable experience for our passionate fans here in DC,” said Rooney.
