Ukrainian chess players Muzychuk withdrew from the tournament in Delhi due to the participation of Russians in it

Ukrainian chess players Anna and Maria Muzychuk withdrew from the Grand Prix tournament in Delhi. This was reported on the website of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

The athletes were replaced by chess players Nino Batsiashvili from Georgia and Vaishali Rameshbabu from India. The official reason for the withdrawal of the Ukrainians is not called, however, the UNIAN agency connects this decision with the admission of Russian representatives to the tournament. Two Russians will perform in Delhi – Alexandra Goryachkina and Ekaterina Lahno.

On February 22, it became known that the FIDE Council allowed Russia to move to Asia. On February 28, the Russian Chess Federation was admitted to the Asian Chess Federation.

In April-May 2023, the Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi will fight for the world chess crown with the Chinese Ding Liren. The tournament will be held in Astana, the domestic player will play under a neutral flag. The current world champion, Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, refused to defend the title.
