Ecuador continues with a consistent campaign in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Tuesday’s Ecuadorian victory against Chile was won with goals from defender Pervis Estupiñán in the 9th minute and midfielder Moisés Caicedo in stoppage time (90+3), in a game in which Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal was sent off early (14).
“We came to a field that for our country has always been complicated and I think we went in to look for the game from the start, we tried to take advantage of opportunities, the goals came on our merits,” said Estupiñán after the match.
Chile lived a nightmarish night, especially in the first half, when they conceded the first goal, lost Vidal by sending-off and Alexis Sánchez and Eugenio Mena by injury, which facilitated Ecuador’s game, which in addition to achieving a great victory in the qualifiers, is the first time he won it on Chilean soil in this qualifying tournament.
With the result, Ecuador follows in third place with 23 points, while Chile dropped to sixth place with 16 points.
“The truth is that it was a very strange game as we conceded the goal too early and Arturo’s sending-off (…) We’re not dead, we’ll keep fighting until the end,” guaranteed Chilean Gary Medel.
