In Latvia, they decided not to deprive Elena Ostapenko of competing with the Russians of funding
The Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC) will return funding from the state budget to tennis player Elena Ostapenko, as well as cyclists Tom Skuins and Krist Neilands. The Minister of Education and Science of Latvia Anda Chaksha told Sportacentrs about this.
She also gave the reason why the authorities changed their mind and reversed the original decision. Chaksha said the funding was returned after consultations with the Latvian Cycling Federation and the Latvian Tennis Union.
On the deprivation of funding Ostapenko, Skuinsh and Neilands, as well as tennis players Daniela Wismane and Daria Semenistaya became known on March 9. The sanctions were related to the performance of athletes in competitions, in which Russian and Belarusian athletes also took part.
At the end of February 2022, many international sports organizations stopped allowing Russians to compete on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee. In some sports, such as tennis, cycling, motorsport and chess, Russians continue to play in neutral status.
