Ukrainian gymnast Vernyaev, caught on meldonium, had his disqualification halved
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has decided to reduce the disqualification of Ukrainian gymnast Oleg Vernyaev. This was reported on the website of the court.
The athlete’s suspension period has been halved from four to two years. The Ukrainian can already return to competitions. “I’m in line. It was a long process, during which I proved that I had no intention to dope, ”Vernyaev wrote on Instagram (the social network is banned in the Russian Federation; belongs to the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in Russia and banned).
On August 26, 2020, meldonium was found in Vernyaev’s sample. In July 2021, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) suspended an athlete caught using a banned drug for four years. The period of disqualification was counted from November 5, 2020.
During the hearing, the athlete stated that meldonium entered the body through contaminated food. Vernyaev was unable to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Games due to disqualification. In 2016, the Ukrainian became the Olympic champion in uneven bars.
