FIFA has approved a new format for the World Cup with 48 teams
The International Football Federation (FIFA) has approved a new format for the 2026 World Cup, in which 48 teams will take part for the first time. This was reported on the website of the organization.
The decision was made at the FIFA Congress, which was held in the capital of Rwanda, Kigali. 48 participants in the final stage will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each.
The top two teams from each quartet will advance directly to the 1/16 finals. They will be joined by eight of the best teams from those that will be third. In total, the teams will play 104 matches at the next World Cup. The tournament will last 39 days.
The 2026 World Cup will take place in the USA, Mexico and Canada. The tournament will be held in three countries at the same time for the first time. The current title holder is Argentina.
