WADA director general found it difficult to predict the timing of the decision in the case of Kamila Valieva
The Director General of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Olivier Niggli, estimated the timeframe for the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to consider appeals in the case of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva. It is reported by TASS.
“It is very difficult to predict now how long it will take, because many different factors affect the case, in particular, how the athlete’s lawyers will handle the case,” Niggli said. He added that WADA is interested in a speedy decision.
On January 13, the disciplinary committee of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA), which is an independent body from the main organization, informed WADA of Valieva’s innocence. At the same time, the skater was deprived of the gold of the Russian Championship-2022. Later, the International Skating Union (ISU) and WADA appealed to CAS, calling for the athlete to be disqualified and her results canceled.
At the 2022 Olympics, Valieva won gold in the team competition, but the Russian team was not awarded due to a doping scandal with her participation. In the sample of the skater from December 2021, traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found. At the same time, CAS allowed her to participate in the individual tournament, where she took fourth place.
