The NHL will give Ovechkin a special prize for reaching second place in the league’s scoring list
The National Hockey League (NHL) and the Washington Capitals will present Alexander Ovechkin, the Russian forward of the Moscow team, with a special prize for coming second in the list of the best snipers. This was reported on the website of the organization.
The Washington Capitals will hold a ceremony honoring the striker ahead of their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 22. It will be attended by team owner Ted Leonsis, club president Dick Patrick, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, the Ovechkin family, and Mark Howe, the son of Canadian hockey player Gordie Howe, whose achievement was surpassed by the Russian.
It is noted that the fans in the stands will also receive gifts. For them, Washington prepared a dummy figure in the form of Ovechkin. The club’s players will go to the reel in the jersey with the number 8, under which the Russian plays in the league.
On December 24 last year, Ovechkin scored 801 goals in the NHL regular season and came in second on the list of the best scorers in the history of the league. At the moment, the 37-year-old Russian is second only to Canadian Wayne Gretzky, who has 894 goals.
Ovechkin has been with Washington since 2005. In 2018, the Russian led the Capitals to the club’s first ever Stanley Cup victory.
