David Neres scores, Benfica defeats Club Brugge and guarantees qualification in the Champions League

At Estádio da Luz, the Benfica thrashed Club Brugge 5-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Rafa Silva, Gonçalo Ramos (twice), João Mário and David Neres were responsible for Tuesday’s triumph, while Meijer reduced the scoreboard.

The Portuguese had already won the first game of the round of 16 in Belgium by 2-0. Roger Schmidt’s men, who came first in group H, between PSG and Juventus, established themselves as one of the great sensations of the tournament.

Benfica’s opponent in the next phase will be defined in a draw on the other Friday (17th), after the conclusion of all the clashes in the return. The Incarnates now defend the leadership of the Portuguese Championship against Maritimo, next Sunday (12).

Club Brugge ends its participation in this Champions League after a good start and a surprising classification. The Belgians passed in second place in group B, leaving Bayer Leverkusen and Atlético de Madrid behind.

The game

Benfica stayed in the attacking field from the opening whistle. In the first minute of the game, João Mário received the ball from Bah and scored a beautiful goal, but the move was canceled by VAR due to an offside at the beginning of the play.

Despite the pressure, it was only after 38 minutes that the home team managed to make the first of the game. Gonçalo Ramos started on the left and crossed for Rafa Silva. In the area, the Portuguese cleared the marking and touched the right corner of Mingolet.

In stoppage time in the first half, Benfica increased their advantage. Gonçalo Ramos received a pass from João Mário in the area, cleared two defenders and hit a powerful shot, expanding the score and forwarding the classification to the Portuguese.

In the second half, the home team continued to attack, even with the duel practically defined. In the 12th minute, Grimaldo received the ball in the area and passed it to Gonçalo Ramos, who finished from the left and scored his second in the game.

At 25 minutes, Sylla tackled Brazilian Gilberto from behind and the referee awarded Benfica a penalty. In the kick, João Mário put the ball in the opposite corner of Mingolet and scored the fourth of the game.

With the rout, coach Roger Schmidt put the Brazilian David Neres on the field in the 29th minute. The striker only needed three minutes to receive the ball from João Neves and finish with a cross, leaving his mark on the game and further expanding the scoreboard for the Portuguese.

Already at 43, Club Brugge finally went on the attack and scored a goal of honor. Meijer received from Buchanan and hit a beautiful shot in the corner, with no chance for goalkeeper Vlachodimos.
