Tim Merlier (Soiudal-Quick Step) is the first leader of the 81st edition of Paris-Nice 2023 after win the first stage by sprintingof 169.4 kilometers with start and finish in La Verrière, which was held this Sunday, March 5.

Merlier, 30 years old and twice champion of his country in the road race (2019 and 2022), signed his twenty-seventh win as a professional and the fourth of 2023being the fastest in the massive arrival, in which he prevailed ahead of Sam Bennett (BORA-hansgroghe) and Mads Pederson (Trek-Segafredo).

After the application of the bonuses, Merlier puts on the first leader’s jerseyr with 4 seconds ahead of Bennett and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), who added 6 seconds in an intermediate sprint. Pogacar went for the bonus on the last ramp of the stage, six kilometers from the finish line and together with Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) offered the first duel between the favourites; in the end the Slovenian prevailed.

In the first stage of Paris-Nice you could also see the first falls and the first dropouts.

This Monday, March 6, the second stage will take place, 163.7 kilometers between Bazainville and Fontainebleau, which can be followed live on eitb.eus and ETB1 from 3:30 p.m.
