US Boxing Federation rejects IBA accusations of calling for a boycott of the 2023 World Cup because of the Russians
The United States Boxing Federation (USA Boxing) responded to accusations of inciting a boycott of the World Boxing Championship due to the participation of Russians in it. The organization’s statement leads Inside The Games.
The federation denied allegations that its chief executive Mike McAtee called on other countries to skip the tournament. “The allegation that McAtee contributed to the International Boxing Association (IBA) boycott of tournaments is unfounded. Neither he nor USA Boxing advised anyone other than American athletes on participation in the World Championships, ”the organization emphasized.
On March 1, the IBA announced that it had opened a disciplinary case against the heads of national federations of countries boycotting the World Cup. The case was opened against the heads of the associations of the United States, Canada, Sweden, the Czech Republic and New Zealand.
On October 5, the IBA allowed boxers from Russia and Belarus to participate in international competitions under the auspices of the organization. Athletes are allowed to compete under national flags, and if they win, the national anthem will be played.
