Law enforcement officers have solved the murder of a St. Petersburg college student, which was committed in 2002, the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation for St. Petersburg and the region reports.
According to investigators, the girl became a victim of her good friend, who all these years remained at large and led a “reclusive lifestyle.”
The body of a 19-year-old college freshman was found on March 16, 2002 at around 12:30 p.m. near 4 Lantern Lane. Presumably, the girl was strangled at night when she was returning home. It was also established that the victim had been raped and beaten prior to his death. A criminal case was initiated on the murder, but then the perpetrator could not be identified.
After 21 years, in February 2023, law enforcement officers received operational information that helped them solve the crime. On March 1, 2023, a 48-year-old man was detained on suspicion of killing a girl in a house on Shkapina Street.
Investigators determined that the suspect knew the victim. On the day of the tragedy, he invited the girl to meet. Together they reached a nightclub, but she refused to go there, deciding to return home. On the way, the young people quarreled, the man attacked his victim, raped her, beat her, and then strangled her and fled the scene of the crime.
Investigators also found that all these years the man constantly changed jobs, as a rule, he worked as a laborer. The last three years he led a reclusive life, did not work anywhere, lived with his father on his pension. The suspect has been handed over to the investigating authorities for procedural actions.
