The European Chess Union called the transition of the Russian Chess Federation to Asia a shame

Vice-President of the European Chess Union (ECU) Malcolm Payne called the transition of Russia to the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) a shame. His words are quoted by Chess.com.

“We are the first sport whose leadership is helping their federation in Russia avoid sanctions by moving to Asia,” Payne said. He added that now it is important to protect the rights of those Russians who want to continue playing under the auspices of the ECU.

Payne also criticized the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for approving the move. “FIDE is clearly not keeping pace with the International Olympic Committee on this issue, and once again the organization looks like a toy in a big game in which the Kremlin controls all actions,” he said.

On February 28, it became known that at a meeting of the ACF General Assembly, a decision was made to admit Russia to the organization. The desire of Russian chess players to play in Asia was reported in April 2022.
