Boxer Wladimir Klitschko accused IOC President Bach of representing Russian interests
Former Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko made accusations against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) because of the support of Russian athletes. His words are quoted by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Klitschko said that IOC President Thomas Bach represents Russian interests, not Olympic values. “He cannot stand under a white flag. Sports, business and politics have a lot in common with each other,” he stressed.
On February 12, Bach criticized the interference of politicians in the discussion on the admission of Russian athletes to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Prior to this, a number of European countries spoke out against the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international tournaments, and Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland Pavel Yablonsky called for a boycott of the Olympics if domestic athletes were admitted.
The IOC is considering the possibility of admitting Russians to the 2024 Games in a neutral status, but there is no final decision on this issue. Competitions in Paris should be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
