This Thursday, at 2:45 pm (Brasília time), the Manchester United visit the Barcelona for the second phase of the Europa League. According to Sports worldMarcus Rashford, one of United’s key players, had the opportunity to transfer to Barça in 2019, but turned it down.
At the time, the Spanish club were looking for a successor to Luis Suarez, who was already 32 years old, and Rashford – at the time 21 – was one of the options. In addition to the young Englishman, Barcelona were interested in Kane, Griezmann, Jovic, Aubameyang and Rodrigo.
Rashford was in doubt if he would renew his contract with Manchester United, which would end in 2020. If they did not reach an agreement with the player, United would have to sell him in 2019 so as not to lose him for free. So, Barça went after the athlete’s brothers (who are also his agents), who were willing to listen to the Spanish club’s proposal.
In the end, Rashford didn’t dare move to Barca. When his brothers hinted at committing to the Spanish club and forcing an exit from Manchester in 2019, the young Rashford had many doubts. He didn’t know if it was the best idea to go to Camp Nou aged just 21, having to adapt to a dressing room full of stars.
Thus, he communicated to his brothers that he would prefer to remain at Old Trafford for another two or three years. On 1 July 2019, United announced the renewal of Rashford for a further four seasons, until 2023.
