Brushing our teeth has become such a chore that we often don’t realize when we’re doing something wrong. But to harm the teeth during a seemingly useful hygiene procedure is quite simple.
According to Doctor Peter, dentist Antonina Krasovskaya has listed some of the most harmful methods of brushing your teeth.
The most common and at the same time the most harmful brushing method is “horizontal”, that is, a method in which horizontal movements of the brush predominate. In this case, plaque is driven into the interdental spaces and the necks of the teeth are abraded, leading to the appearance of wedge-shaped enamel defects in the cervical area. The same effect is achieved if you have the habit of pressing too hard on the toothbrush when brushing.
Another method that is not the most favorable for the health of the teeth is the “vertical” one, it is similar to the horizontal one, only the movements are carried out up and down. Thus, plaque can get under the gum, causing it to become inflamed.
In addition, the most traumatic factors include brushing your teeth with a too hard brush and the abuse of whitening pastes. All this injures and abrades the enamel, leading to its thinning and increased sensitivity. This does not mean that it is necessary to completely abandon whitening pastes, it is simply necessary to individually select the mode of their use and the degree of abrasiveness.
Andrey Yaremenko, the chief dentist of St. Petersburg, added that another unsuccessful method of brushing your teeth is to brush them immediately after waking up, before breakfast. There is an opinion that this way you can clean the oral cavity of all the microbes that have accumulated overnight. However, they do not pose any harm to your teeth – but it is better to clean the food particles after a morning meal. Brushing your teeth too quickly can also be considered harmful. If you are in a hurry every morning, it is better to buy an electric toothbrush – it will help reduce the process to two minutes.
Finally, another harmful, but still loved by many in our country method of brushing your teeth is brushing with tooth powder. This abrasive will scratch your enamel.
