IOC says countries calling for boycott of Olympic 2024 should not ignore human rights

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has issued a new statement to the countries calling for a boycott of the 2024 Olympic Games. It is available on the organization’s website.

“The Olympic community has an obligation to uphold the Olympic Charter and international human rights standards that prohibit discrimination. When states so blatantly ignore human rights, we have a greater obligation to support our shared values, ”the IOC stressed. The organization added that history has shown that previous boycotts have not achieved their political goals and only served to punish athletes from countries that missed tournaments.

Earlier, the IOC appealed to the coalition of countries opposed to the admission of Russians to the 2024 Olympics. The organization recommended not to sign a declaration against the participation of Russian athletes in the Paris Games. The head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, also criticized the interference of politicians in the discussion of this issue.

The IOC is considering the possibility of admitting Russians to the 2024 Games in a neutral status, but a final decision on this issue has not been made. Competitions in Paris should be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
