Fine, removal from home and even loss of points: the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) will impose these sanctions on clubs in the event of possible racist acts by their fans, local media reported on Tuesday.
The provision was introduced in the regulations that will govern the 2023 men’s and women’s tournaments organized by the local football governing body, such as the leagues of the different categories, the Copa do Brasil and lower division championships.

The teams will be fined (with an amount not yet disclosed) for a first case of racism, according to the regulations presented this Tuesday to the clubs during the Brasileirao Technical Council, at the CBF headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.
If there is a recidivism, it will be punished with the loss of the premises or playing behind closed doors and, if there is a new discriminatory act, with loss of points, according to the portal Globe Sports.

The initiative was promoted by Ednaldo Rodrigues, the first black to hold the presidency of the CBF and who has made the fight against racism one of the priorities of his administration, which began in March 2022.
Previous regulations ordered the participants of Brazilian competitions -clubs, players, coaches- “collaborate to prevent unsportsmanlike behaviour”, including “racism, xenophobia or any other form of discrimination”.
Failure to comply with this provision -whose penalties did not specifically punish racism but disrespect for the spirit of the regulations- was punished with warnings, fines or impediment to registration or transfer of players.
However, the sports justice, an independent administrative body of the CBF, already provides for various sanctions against athletes, coaches, clubs or fans for racist acts, from suspensions, fines, loss of points to expulsions from the different competitions.
In the Technical Council of the Brasileirao, the first division clubs unanimously approved to increase the allowed limit of foreign soccer players (from five to seven) summoned for each game, according to the portal UOL Sports. The regulations will begin to apply in the 2023 Brasileirao, which begins in April. (D)
