The technician of manchester cityPep Guardiola, publicly apologized to the former captain of the LiverpoolSteven Gerrard, on Tuesday, for a comment made following the Premier League’s announcement of its investigation into 100 accounting breaches by the Catalan coach’s club.
The defending champions could face a points withdrawal or even relegation if found guilty of these allegations of financial irregularities between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons by an independent commission.
A miss by Gerrard in Liverpool’s defeat by Chelsea in 2014 opened the door for City to clinch the Premier League title, two years before Guardiola’s arrival in Manchester.
In his first press conference after the allegations were revealed, Guardiola said: “I don’t know that we are responsible for Steven Gerrard’s slip.”
The Manchester City manager said he has already apologized privately to Gerrard, the former Aston Villa manager. Gerrard is considered one of the best players in Liverpool’s history, despite never having won the Premier League.
“I apologize to Steven Gerrard for the unnecessary and stupid comment I made last time about him,” said Guardiola.
“He knows how much I admire him for what he’s done for the country I live in. I defended my club but I didn’t represent it well with my stupid comment. I’m ashamed,” he added.
“I apologized to him privately, but as the comments were public, my apologies must also be public,” he concluded.
