French midfielder Francis Coquelin, from Villarreal, will miss the rest of the season. The player had a serious knee injury confirmed this Monday.
Medical examinations confirmed that “Coquelin suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee”, in the defeat against Barcelona by 1-0 at the weekend, for the Spanish Championship, explained the Yellow Submarine.
Coquelin “will undergo surgery in the next few days and is regrettably out for the remainder of the current season,” the club added.
Villarreal is currently eighth in La Liga and is qualified for the Round of 32 of the Conference League.
The 31-year-old Frenchman arrived at the club at the start of last season, in which he suffered an Achilles tendon injury and was sidelined for three months.
With Submarino Amarelo, Coquelin played a total of 25 games, counting all competitions.
