Oleg Matytsin called the idea to create a refugee team of Russian athletes humiliating
The Minister of Sports of Russia Oleg Matytsin appreciated the idea of the Minister of Sports and Tourism of Poland Kamil Bortnichuk to create a refugee team of Russian athletes to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Matytsin called this proposal an attempt to humiliate the athletes. “This indicates the level of culture of the respective master, his misunderstanding of the essence, his active desire to split the unity and the violation of all principles,” he added.
On February 10, Bortnichuk suggested creating a refugee team from representatives of Russia and Belarus. “I draw attention to the fact that the neutrality of Russian sports is a fiction, that there are no institutions in Russia that are independent of authoritarian or totalitarian power,” the minister said.
On January 26, the President of the NOC of Ukraine, Vadim Gutzeit, said that the Ukrainian team could miss the Olympics in Paris if the teams of Russia and Belarus participate in it. A day earlier, the IOC noted that they were considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions of athletes from these countries.
