Ecuador hosted Venezuela at the Casa Blanca Stadium and put serious pressure on the visitors for the result in the first half. The 1-0 triumph ended a streak of two games without a win and reassured the Ecuadorians.
The result takes Ecuador to 20 points, in third place in the South American Qualifiers. Venezuela remains in the lantern, with just seven points won.
Ecuador dominated the first stage of the match and played for a long time in the attacking field. After many attempts, Gustavo Alfaro’s team managed to open the scoring in the 40th minute, with Hincapié heading a cross from Gonzalo Plata.
The second half was much more balanced, with Leonardo González’s team equalizing the offensive actions. Even so, Venezuela’s front men did not have a happy night and stopped at the Ecuadorian defense.
Venezuela’s next challenge in the Qualifiers will be against Peru at the Estadio Polideportivo de Pueblo Nuevo. The match will be held at 20:00 (GMT) on Tuesday. On the same day, Ecuador visits Chile at the San Carlos de Apoquindo Stadium at 21:15.
