There is a sudden turn on the 2030 Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympic Games are getting harder and harder to organize. Creating appropriate conditions for ski jumpers, bobsledders or acrobatic skiers to compete requires very large financial outlays, which, in the absence of millions of sponsorship, has become completely unprofitable. For this reason, the IOC has been looking for a potential home for the 2030 Games for a very long time.

A sudden change of plans

Today, everything indicates that the authorities of the Olympic Committee have finally succeeded. In the morning, a press conference was called by Swedish activists, who informed about the commencement of the procedure to check the possibility of organizing the event in Stockholm. This is all the more surprising as Swedish sports authorities have previously admitted that they are not interested in taking on so much responsibility on a given date.

This was related to the fight for the organization of the Winter Games in 2026, which Stockholm and Aare lost to Italian Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. At that time, the decision of the IOC was influenced by the decisions of politicians who did not want to provide potential organizers with financial guarantees needed, among others, to organize the event. reconstruction of existing facilities or construction of a new Olympic village.

No candidates

It is possible that the IOC persuaded the Swedes to change their minds about the 2030 Winter Games with a special offer it was able to present to them. The Committee had huge problems with finding a potential organizer, which was to be selected already this year. In recent weeks, Vancouver withdrew from the competition, whose city council gave up on the idea for financial reasons. In Sapporo, on the other hand, the main topic of talks is the investigation into bribery during the organization of the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, which led to the suspension of the Japanese candidacy.

Just a few months ago, Salt Lake City was also considered. The Americans, after much consideration and analysis of the situation, decided, however, that they would be ready to receive the best athletes in the world only in 2034.

When Stockholm applied for the organization of the competition in 2026, there were plans to hold competitions in individual competitions not only in Sweden, but also in Latvia. The capital of the “Country of Three Crowns” was to be the main base, equipped with, among others, in the halls for skating. Ski jumping was to return to Falun, alpine skiers to the well-known Aare, and bobsleigh and tobogganers were to be sent to Sigulda, where the World Cup takes place every year.

We will have to wait a bit for further decisions regarding Stockholm’s candidacy. It is possible that we will not know the details of the project until the end of this year.
