UN expert Xantaki called the removal of Russians from international tournaments discrimination
The UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Greek Alexandra Xantaki, appreciated the suspension of Russian athletes from international tournaments. Her words are reported by NRK.
The expert called what is happening direct discrimination based on nationality. “Mixing governments with individuals is a very, very bad idea,” she added.
On February 1, UN human rights experts welcomed the desire of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to consider allowing athletes from Russia to compete in neutral status. The IOC noted that only those athletes who did not support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will be able to get permission to perform.
At the end of February 2022, many sports organizations, including skiing and football, banned Russians from participating in tournaments on the recommendation of the IOC. In some disciplines, athletes continue to perform in a neutral status.
