Olympic champion Akhaimova: from childhood we get used to performing in a tight-fitting swimsuit
Russian gymnast, Olympic champion Lilia Akhaimova, in a commentary to Lente.ru, appreciated the decision of German rivals to abandon swimsuits in tournaments in favor of overalls.
According to Akhaimova, athletes should be able to choose what to wear to the start. “Most often, gymnasts from childhood get used to going out in public in a tight-fitting leotard. But if someone is uncomfortable, then overalls are a good solution. Gymnastics is about aesthetics, and if the overalls look nice and comply with the rules, then why not? – said the athlete.

Akhaimova stressed that the main thing in a swimsuit is comfort. “A swimsuit should not restrict movement. And if it is not only comfortable, but also beautiful, it’s generally perfect!” added the gymnast.
In April 2021, German gymnast Sarah Voss entered the competitions at the European Championships in Basel in a closed jumpsuit to protest against the sexualization of women in sports. She was supported by other members of the German team Kim Bui and Elisabeth Seitz, as well as the German Artistic Gymnastics Federation. The gymnasts held a similar action at the Tokyo Olympics in the summer of 2021.
25-year-old Akhaimova is the champion of the Tokyo Olympics in the team event. She also has two team silver medals at the World Championships (2018 and 2019).
