Leonardo González will stop being Venezuela’s coach after matches against Ecuador and Peru

The strategist has been in charge on an interim basis since August, when he replaced Portuguese José Peseiro.

The interim coach of Venezuela, Leonardo González, announced on Wednesday that he will leave the Vinotinto bench, which he has occupied temporarily since August, after Tuesday’s game against Peru for the fourteenth day of the South American qualifying rounds of the World Cup in Qatar.

“We know that we (the technical team) are going to be in Peru. That is why they asked us for this option and we told (the Venezuelan Football Federation – FVF) ‘it’s these two games and that’s it’, let’s clarify and handle it ”, González said at the press conference prior to Thursday’s game against Ecuador in Quito.

González replaced on an interim basis the Portuguese José Peseiro, who resigned as coach after taking more than a year without receiving his salary.

Initially, the FVF entrusted him to direct three matches of the South American qualifiers for Qatar 2022 while hiring a coach.

The contract was extended as the qualifying matches were played and, finally, he will lead Vinotinto in eight games, including today against Ecuador and next Tuesday against Peru.

The technician, who has made his interim position compatible with that of coach of Deportivo Lara, he was “grateful and happy for having had the opportunity” to lead the national team.

“It is a responsibility with a country that I tried to assume with the greatest responsibility of the case, trying to open a range of options and think, more than myself, in the selection, what we can leave in this process with players who have been able to debut at this time”, He explained.

During his time at the helm of the national team, Venezuela has won one game, against Ecuador, and lost five, against Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, Brazil and Chile. (D)
