Van der Poel beats Van Aert in the sprint and achieves his fifth world cyclo-cross title

Mathieu van der Poel achieved his fifth cyclo-cross world champion title this Sunday in Hoogerheide (Netherlands), at the beat his great rival Wout van Aert in a long final sprint.

After more than an hour of hard racing, the title was decided in the final stretch, in which, as if it were a road test, Van der Poel launched an attack before which Van Aert could barely do anything to avoid the Dutchman’s fifth crown before near 50,000 viewers who witnessed a new duel between two runners who have been competing since they were eight years old.

Van der Poel, 28 years old and who joins this title to those achieved in 2015, 2019, 2020 and 2021finished with the same time as Van Aert, who was chasing his fourth crown. The podium was completed by another Belgian, Eli Iserbyttwelve seconds behind the champion.

The course of the race, which did not favor anyone, was designed by former runner Adrie van der Poel, father of Mathieu.
