João Mário scores for the third straight game and Benfica beats Casa Pia

the leader of Portuguese Championship won one more match and is taking big steps towards the national title. This Saturday, Benfica defeated Casa Pia by 3-0, for the 19th round, at Estádio da Luz, with goals from João Mario and Alexander Bah.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the 35th minute of the game. Playing as an attacking and centralized midfielder, David Neres received in depth and invaded the opposing area. The former playerSão Paulo crossed backwards and found João Mário free on the penalty spot, who arrived kicking to score the first goal of the match.

Benfica extended the advantage in the 43rd minute, again with João Mário. Full-back Grimaldo received it wide on the left and crossed low. The ball crossed the area without touching any player, until João Mário appeared at the second post to send the back of the net.

With the two goals scored against Casa Pia, João Mário reached his third straight game scoring for Benfica. In the last rounds, the midfielder scored two goals against Arouca and one against Paços Ferreira, both away from home. The player has already scored ten goals in this Portuguese Championship and provided three assists.

At the head of the scoreboard, the team led by Roger Schmidt controlled the match and did not give Casa Pia many chances. In the 26th minute of the second stage, right-back Bah shot and took a risk from outside the area. Luckily for him, the ball deflected off the defender and took away all the chances of the opposing goalkeeper’s saves. With the goal, Benfica declared a 3-0 victory.

The result takes the Encarnados to 53 points after 20 games and opens an 11-point lead. the rival Porto is in second place with 42 points, having played two games less. Casa Pia occupies the fifth position in the Portuguese Championship, with 30 points added.
