Czech Republic refuses to boycott the 2024 Olympics if Russian athletes are admitted

The National Olympic Committee of the Czech Republic refused to boycott the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris if Russian athletes were admitted to them. It is reported by Česká televize.

“A boycott is out of the question, because we would not want to punish Czech athletes and repeat the disappointing experience of the communist era in 1984,” the NOC of the European country said. They drew attention to the fact that the discussion about the participation of Russian athletes in the Games continues and the position of international sports federations should become decisive.

On February 3, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Yablonsky called for a boycott of the 2024 Olympics if Russians were admitted. He called it necessary pressure on the International Olympic Committee (IOC). According to the Polish side, 40 countries oppose the participation of Russians in tournaments.

On January 25, the IOC announced that it was considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions for Russian and Belarusian athletes. It was noted that athletes who did not support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will have a chance to get permission to compete in international tournaments. After criticism from Ukraine and the Baltic states, the IOC said a final decision had not yet been made.

The Olympic Games are to be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
