English justice announced on Thursday that England footballer Mason Greenwood, 21, has been acquitted of allegations of domestic and sexual violence against his ex-girlfriend. The player of Manchester United has been sidelined since January 2022.
The young athlete drew attention after good performances for the Red Devils first team. In January 2022, however, he was detained following accusations of rape, domestic violence and coercion. The victim would be his ex-girlfriend, who posted videos on social networks showing the result of the violence.
Following the accusations, the English club removed the player from all activities with the team. Nike suspended the sponsorship contract with the athlete and he was removed, by Electronic Arts, from the FIFA 22 game.
On Thursday, a British court issued a statement saying Greenwood was no longer facing charges. Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr said the decision to discontinue investigations “was not taken lightly”. The withdrawal of key witnesses and the arrival of new evidence would have been the reason for the end of the investigation.
Criminal proceedings against a 21-year-old man in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022 have, today (Thursday 2 February 2023), been discontinued by the CPS.
