In the country, mandatory elections will be held one day after the final and the sale of alcohol will not be allowed from 7:30 p.m. the day before.
A Uruguayan legislator proposed this Wednesday to suspend the alcoholic ban that will govern in the country on the weekend of November 27 and 28 due to an election act that coincides with the end of the 2021 Libertadores Cup, before the claim of merchants and agents of the tourism sector.
On Sunday, November 28, mandatory elections of the Social Security Bank (BPS), the state social security institute, will be held in Uruguay. Around 1.8 million Uruguayans are authorized to vote and elect representatives of workers, retirees and companies.
As with any national election, the prohibition to sell alcohol will apply from 7:30 p.m. the day before, just as the final of the Copa Libertadores between Flamengo and Palmeiras is ending at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo.
“It just coincides with the choice of the BPS, which is important but clearly limits the visit and the walk to all those who come to enjoy a football final.“, Said this Wednesday in statements to the press the pro-government senator Germán Coutinho, who presented a bill to suspend the ban for the only time.
“The season has another spirit. It is designed for national elections, where there is much more passion, more competition and where there is a moment of peace and reflection, “he said, adding that in this case” it coincides with an event that Uruguay has been waiting for a long time, which is to be the axis of America and the world ”.
The tourism sector eagerly awaits the arrival of thousands of tourists for the final of the Libertadores, as well as for the defining match of the South American, which will also star two Brazilian teams, Athletico Paranaense and Red Bull Bragantino, on Saturday, November 20.
The hotels in Montevideo, as well as in several nearby departments (provinces), are full for both weekends, and the prices of private accommodation have skyrocketed in anticipation of the massive arrival of fans.
The president of the Center for Retail, Barista, Self-Service and Related Warehouses of Uruguay (Cambadu), Daniel Fernández, told the local newspaper The country at the end of October that Conmebol had requested from the sector “the abundance of beer (…) well ‘frozen’, cold”.
The Electoral Court explained that the rule that prohibits the sale of alcohol during elections does not establish penalties for non-compliance. (D)
