Latvia threatens to boycott 2024 Olympics if Russians are admitted

The Latvian Olympic Committee said they would boycott the Olympics with the participation of Russia

The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Latvia assessed the likelihood of participation of the national team in the 2024 Olympic Games if Russians are admitted to the tournament. The words of the chairman of the organization Georges Tikmers are quoted by Delfi.

“The position of Latvia is that if these Olympic Games were held now and it was expected that athletes from Russia and Belarus would participate in them, I think that the Latvian team would not go to these Games,” Tikmers said. He added that the NOC plans to invite the Latvian sports federations to appeal to the international federations to prevent athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in the qualifying competitions for the Olympic Games.

Earlier, the head of the NOC of Ukraine, Vadim Gutzeit, said that the national team could boycott the 2024 Games if the teams of Russia and Belarus participate in them. In response, the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, said that such a decision was not in line with the Olympic Charter.

On January 25, the IOC said that they were considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions for Russian and Belarusian athletes. It was reported that only athletes who did not support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will be able to get permission to compete in international tournaments.
